Born and raised in Long Beach California, it didn’t take long for this Southern California native and Wilson High School Graduate to return home in 1987. After leaving Wilson in 1975, Dr. Drum graduated from USC in 1980, and Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1984. After Medical School, Dr. Drum went to cross town rival UCLA to complete his residency in internal medicine in 1987. Though board certified and specializing in internal medicine, he was asked to join the staff of The Department of Athletics, Long Beach State University. Since 1987, Dr. Drum has been acting as the team physician for all LBSU’s men’s and women’s sports. In 1998, the Department of Athletics named Dr. Drum as their Medical Director with over site of the training room and staff. As his internal medicine practice grew, Dr. Drum was asked to be the traveling physician for United States Water Polo Inc. in 1998. In 2001, The Executive Board of United States Water Polo named him their Medical Director. As Medical Director, he oversees the medical operations for USA Water Polo both domestically and internationally, maintains a staff of traveling physicians and trainers and helped develop and deploy a drug education program. More recently Dr. Drum, has been selected to serve with United States Olympic Committee, Division of Sports Medicine and has experience with athletes from novice and beginner to national and Olympic caliber athletes. He travels extensively to many international events from the South Pacific to Eastern Europe. His more notable experiences include working with the USA Women’s Water Polo Team during the Sydney Olympic Games where they won the silver medal and working at the USOC Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Most of his internal medicine patients seek him out not only for the expertise he offers in complicated adult care areas-i.e. Hypertension, cholesterol management, diabetes and heart disease, but also for the way he integrates his sports medicine philosophy into their total health care. His slogan “we do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.” Always trying to decrease the number of medications patients are required to take, the success of this strategy in health care often involves the judicious use of both weight control and exercise. “My happiest moments are when a diabetic can stop taking insulin.” Married to wife Kathy, they have four children, Lauren, Travis, Ryan and Matthew. Once an avid golfer, today he runs ½ marathons and participates in Olympic distance triathlons. Thanks to his coach George, at Cardio beat Gym (http://www.cardiobeat.org ) he hopes to keep this up as long as he can. |
